As we have settled back into the school year, we have been focusing on establishing and maintaining positive working relationships. In assemblies and classrooms, we have discussed the importance of showing kindness, gratitude and empathy. These are skills that show our character and strengths as a person and are valuable as we grow and develop.
Kindness is the quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate:
Gratitude the quality of being thankful and readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness:
Empathy is the ability to understand things from another person’s perspective. It's the ability to share someone else's feelings and emotions and understand why they're having those feelings.
Within a school community of near 500 people, it is important that we all share in ensuring Port Dalrymple school is safe, supportive, and successful and that we all take responsibility for promoting our culture in a positive way. We have appreciated working in partnership with parents to provide consistent messages and positive solutions to ensure our students continue to learn and develop skills and knowledge that will support future success.
Across the school students have participated in a range of activities that have allowed them t0 stretch and grow. Learn to Swim for our years 3-6 is now complete with many students pleased with their improvements and increased confidence around water. Student in Years 11/12 have had opportunities to participate in work placements that align with their pathway learning and are establishing significant links with our industry partners and a group of Year 9 and 10 students were interviewed for a place in the GFG Liberty Education program for 2023.
Year 5-6 students had the opportunity to explore the Beaconsfield Mine and Heritage Centre to celebrate their Hass unit of work about the Gold Rush.

Launceston Women’s Day Event
On Wednesday the 8th of March, four female student leaders were chosen to attend the International Woman’s Day breakfast at Launceston in the Country Club Casino. The event lasted for an hour, breakfast was given out and shortly after four women arrived at the panel to start discussing their lives. Each told the audience how they deal with women’s hardships within their workforce. People from industry, students from different schools and many ladies attended the breakfast. Interesting topics were discussed such as how they were treated in the workforce, struggles and experiences in their community. They then answered questions from the audience and did a raffle.

George Town Women’s Day Event
On Tuesday the 7th of March fifteen Year 9/10 students were invited to the Soroptimist International Women’s Day breakfast at the Memorial Hall. This event included a panel of 3 guest speakers, one of them being our Principal Ms Burt. They talked about the experiences of women, stereotypes, and women in the workforce. Overall, the breakfast was a very nice event and a wonderful way to start the day. I am thankful to have been invited to the event and to be supported by our industry partners Bell Bay Aluminium at both events.

Across the school in PE Classes students have been preparing for the upcoming Athletics Carnival. On Tuesday 28th and Wednesday 29th March, Port Dalrymple School will be holding the Kinder - Year 10 Athletics Carnival at school. Students in Kinder to Year 2 will have their events on Tuesday only (Day 1), The Year 1 and Year 2 students will also participate in limited track and field events on Day 2 of the carnival.
At Port Dalrymple School we provide all students the opportunity to participate in both traditional track and field, and novelty events. Our focus is on participation and students giving their best effort. The carnival is tabloid style where students rotate around events in year groups which are split into girls and boys. Student are to remain with their groups throughout the day.
The carnival begins at 9:10am. All students are expected to be at school at the normal time. Students will go to class teacher for attendance and will remain in class teacher groups until the first event of the day. The Athletics Carnival is a normal school day and students will be dismissed at 3:00pm
As the carnival is a busy day, there will not be a usual recess and lunch break. Instead, we advise that students snack in-between their events. There will be a barbecue available and drinks to purchase on the day. Prep - Year 2 students will be able to pre order for the BBQ.
We ask that students are dressed appropriately and prepared for all weather conditions. Warm clothing is strongly advised, however as we leave summer the warmer weather is still around with its higher UV levels. It is imperative that your child has a hat and sunscreen. Hoodies are not an acceptable item of clothing. The school will provide sunscreen; however, we encourage students to bring their own.
House Pride
As a school, we are continually building school pride and some friendly rivalry at our sports carnivals. Students are encouraged to wear their house colours and display signs/slogans that have been made at school. All students have been allocated a house – Norfolk (blue) and Paterson (white).
Spectators
We invite all parents, grandparents, and friends to come along and support the students doing their best. There will be a designated spectator area For the safety of all involved we ask that spectators are respectful and remain in the designated area.
Year 11-12- Hospitality VET Course
Students have had a productive start in the Certificate II Hospitality courses this year, with all students successfully obtaining the unit of competency for RSA – Responsible Service of Alcohol. They completed the required theory tasks complemented by the practical component of this unit by use of role plays and a ‘mock service’ using non-alcoholic beverages. This is a skill set and qualification that will enable students to pursue employment within the hospitality industry. SIT20316 Certificate II in Hospitality is delivered by TasTAFE teacher, Kylie Allen.
International Women’s Day Events for 2023
On the 7th and 8th of March, Port Dalrymple School attended International Women’s Day breakfasts in George Town at the Memorial Hall and in Launceston at the Country Club Casino. Ms Allan attended the George Town Breakfast with fifteen female students from Year 9 and 10.
This opportunity was generously supported by Bell Bay Aluminium and facilitated by Soroptimist International. The breakfast included an enlightening panel of three local women who are successful in their respective fields. This included Kayla Williams and Annette Ramona from Bell Bay Aluminium and Liberty Bell Bay. We also heard from our very own Principal Lynette Burt. The panel was moderated by Rachel Williams and topics included issues faced by women, inclusion of women in STEM and trades, and advice to students regarding choosing careers and embracing opportunities. The event was catered by Lodge Lauriston who prepared a fantastic breakfast spread!
It was an early start for our 4 student leaders who along with Jayne, left George Town at 6am. We were amongst 200 attendees from the Nothern region for the Rotary International Women’s day breakfast.
Rotary Tasmania project for 2023 is supporting Tasmanian women living with a gynaecological cancer. This is a Tasmanian project, with monies raised going towards supporting access to vitally important clinical trials for Tasmanian women suffering from a gynaecological cancer. We were fortunate to hear from Dr Susan Black who is leading these trials.
A big thank you again to Bell Bay Aluminium for giving us this opportunity to attend and represent our school.
Physical Recreation Excursion Hollybank Treetops
On Tuesday the 7th of March and Friday the 10th of March, both Physical Recreation classes were a part of an excursion to Hollybank Treetops. There were plenty of nerves and excitement, for students and teachers as they embarked on a challenging ropes course. The ropes course gave students the opportunity to work on their problem solving and confidence whilst giving them a full body work out. Congratulations to the two classes involved which had a 100% participation rate from students who went! Students are already looking forward to their next excursion for Physical Recreation.
Our Year 9-10 students have been busy preparing the 2023 menu for our Friday Café Service. This year they are working under the guidance of Sarah who is a qualified chef and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to this role.
Sushi rolls will be just one of the menu selections that staff and students can order.
We look forward to Café starting.
