Year 11/12 information Session For 2022
A reminder to all Year 10 and 11 students and families that the information session on Years 11 and 12 2022 will be held in 11/12 classroom on Monday, 13th September at 6.00pm. We encourage all parents/guardians of Year 10 and 11 students to attend. Information will also be provided on possible school-based apprenticeships that Port Dalrymple School will support next year.
Course Selection 2022
Course guides have been sent home with students in Years 7, 8 and 9 for students to select their elective classes for 2022. Please encourage your child to speak to their class teacher if they have questions. Students are encouraged to make their course selections based on their future career and educational pathways. This year we are offering a number of academic courses which directly link to years 11 and 12 and the courses offered in this sector. The year long courses include Maths Extended, and Science Extended. Students will select their courses via the online selection process in class teacher. Parent/Guardians will then be provided with a copy of their child's selections to sign.
2022 Planning
We have started planning and staffing for 2022. It is most important if your family circumstances are changing in 2022 and your child is not going to be attending Port Dalrymple School that you notify the office ASAP or an Assistant Principal.
Enrolment appointments for 2022 are now being booked for students in Prep-10 who do not currently attend Port. If you require an enrolment appointment please contact the school.

School Attendance
To get the most out of education, children need to go to school every day. School attendance has a major influence on educational outcomes at all grade levels. Students who attend school regularly are more likely to achieve better results at school and are more likely to complete their schooling.
At Port Dalrymple if your child is absent from school and the absence has not been explained a text message will be sent to the parent/guardian mobile phone. It is most important that if parent/guardian contact details change that the general office is notified.
Attendance alerts and letters are generated for students who have 5 or above unexplained absence. It is most important that parents/guardians respond to the letter to explain the absence where possible.
Students who are late to school must sign in at the general office and students must sign out at the general office when leaving with parents before 3.00pm.
Parents/guardians can encourage their child to attend school by having a positive attitude to learning and their child’s involvement in school activities. Lots of options are available for parents/guardians to engage in the school.
Poor school attendance patterns can start as early as Year 1. It is important that from the first day of school parents/guardians set an expectation that their child will be at school every day.
TIPS - THINGS YOU CAN DO TO SUPPORT SCHOOL ATTENDANCE
- Talk positively about attending school and learning
- Help your child get into a routine for getting ready to go to school stress-free
- Help your child to get ready for school in the morning
- Talk about the positive social aspect of the school environment:
- Friends
- Favourite classes
- Favourite teachers
Attendance reports will be sent home with school reports. It is most important if you have a question regarding the attendance report or your child has unexplained absences which can be explained that you contact the school on the above number.

It has been a busy few weeks in the Middle School Sector. Students have been working hard in all aspects of their learning and have been participating in a number of additional opportunities outside their regular school program.
Middle School teachers have been particularly impressed with the way in which our students have conducted themselves this term, displaying the school values and DoE Values of Respect, Aspiration, Courage and Growth.
Legal Aid Presentation
Recently students in Years 7 and 8 viewed a presentation from Legal Aid highlighting the importance of being safe online and the various forms of cyber bullying. We would like to thank Legal Aid for giving up their time to speak with our students on these valuable topics. The students in both sessions were highly engaged and respectfully participated, asking insightful questions and sharing their own online experiences. If parents/guardians would like more information about how to support students online, please visit the E-Safety Commissioner Website- https://www.esafety.gov.au/ We encourage our families to have conversations around being safe online regularly.
Maths Relay
We were extremely impressed by our Yearrs 5/6 and 7/8 students who recently participated in the Maths Relay competition. Students were well prepared for their relays with the problem-solving work covered in all Maths classes, in addition to some extra coaching sessions held with Mr Johns. We would like to thank our families for making the trip to Launceston so that our students could participate in their event and represent our school with pride. Thank you also to Mr Johns, for the additional work put in with students. From all reports, both teams were very competitive in the close competition. Congratulations to all.

On Tuesday, 31st of August, 1/2 Allan and 1/2 Bennett went on an excursion to the Low Head Pilot Station and Light House. We heard about why the Light House is important and what it is used for today. We asked questions about old items at the Pilot Station that were used by people in the community in the past. This excursion provided us with information about how to care for places, and how things have changed in our local community. This is our focus for HASS this term.
‘Is this anchor from the Titanic?’ Dominic
‘Is this swim suit from 100 years ago?’ Kayleb
‘Gee this stuff looks old!’ Xavier

As part of our ‘Eat a Rainbow’ unit during Health Prep/1 Wood and Leslie has the opportunity to make fruit skewers with a variety of fresh and colourful fruits.
Bananas, apples, grapes, pineapple, peaches and blueberries were a big hit! Many faces were scrunched up at the sour taste of grapefruit. So many “yums” were said about honey dew. It was a great way to try new fruit!

JCP Empowering Youth Seminar – ‘The Choice is Yours’
Years 7 – 10: Tuesday 12 October 9am – 2.50pm
School Gym
On Tuesday 12th October, we have JCP Youth visiting us to provide a day’s program for our Year 7, 8, 9 and 10 students. Will Smith is CEO and Founder of JCP and he won the 2020 Tasmanian Young Australian of the Year for his work with youth. Our students will be undertaking a full day program, ‘The Choice is Yours’, delivered by Will and the JCP team.
Students will be taken on a journey through positive and negative risk-taking behaviours and the effect this can have on themselves and those around them. The team will work with students to empower them, encourage them to step out of their comfort zone and they will share messages and strategies about how students can make positive choices.
This is a very inspirational and motivational program that has been delivered in many high schools in Tasmania. Students will have recess and lunch as normal and will need to wear school uniform. Should you have any queries, please contact Libby Williams at school on 6382 0500.

Over the last few weeks in the 5/6 sector, we have been doing so many exciting things, with still many more to come. The 5/6 cohort have been focusing on making the world a better place in Design and Technology classes. Students have been walking around the school and collecting rubbish then tallying how much trash we found in different parts of the school. This is a good way to help the environment as well as doing useful work around our school. We have been doing a great job on Wrapper Free Wednesdays with the class that has accumulated the least amount of rubbish over the term earning a prize in week ten.
This Friday is the last round of 5/6 sport with South George Town Primary and Star of the Sea. In week nine this term our football, netball and soccer teams will compete in the Country Gold Carnival.
Our School Association is raising money for Breakfast Club through the Sunrise Bakery fundraiser. The money raised will be put towards things such as cereal and milk for students who don’t get their breakfast at home and uniforms for the second-hand store. The Junior Leadership Board help Jayne in the kitchen Wednesday-Friday each week and deliver breakfast to classrooms.
